The Honeymoon hotspots: When you have to go

Michael Cottam, one of the founders of TheBigDay, offers advice on how to help choose where to go Honeymoon.

So you have a boyfriend … Congratulations! One of the most fun parts of getting married is planning that honeymoon trip of a lifetime. And if you have not even narrowed it down to one country, much less an island or a resort, do not worry, many couples (if not most) are the moon of honey in the same boat.

Some couples begin to browse travel or bridal magazines for images that are attractive and romantic thing you can do this, but more likely to decide on the best target market instead of the best destination for their wants, needs and style.

The following are questions to be do it yourself, it'll help you find out what your options and help you ask better questions of your travel agency … that will help you plan that perfect honeymoon.

When are you going?

Every destination has its high and low season, and this is usually a combination of climate and seasons where tourists often take their vacations. Some destinations, like Hawaii, have very little variation in climate throughout the year, others, like the Caribbean have a definite hurricane season. However, it is important to know that the Caribbean is a big place and different parts have different hurricane seasons, and parts of the western Caribbean really are not prone to hurricanes at all. Other destinations – such as Central America and Southeast Asia or the monsoon rains have seasons. You really need to know the specific destination to get an idea of whether or not their "green" season is too "green" (rain!) For you.

Also, ask yourself if you are willing to delay the start of their honeymoon a few weeks or months. The summer months are very popular for weddings as it tends to be easier for family and friends to get to the wedding, besides, if you are having an outdoor wedding, the odds good time, are more in your favor. However, this also tends to be the face (and sometimes more populous) season for many honeymoon destinations. Take a month off after the wedding before going on your honeymoon can give you time to relax and unwind from the wedding, write your thank you notes, and take advantage of lower prices As the season known as "shoulder" (between high and low season).

Travel time, vacation time

How much time outside of work are you having? How much of it are you willing to spend on an airplane?

If you go on an African safari, which will consume about a day and a half trip each way from the U.S. This is fine if you're going to be there a couple of weeks, but if those days come from his total of 7 vacation days, might consider somewhere closer. And the distance is not the only factor: how many stops will it take to get where you going? If you have to land on an island principal, then wait 4 to 6 hours of the hopper of the "island" of flight that carried out the withdrawal distance of their private island, that will consume your time Holiday also.

A great option, if available, is a red-eye flight, in which sleep on the plane and wake up at your destination, saving a holiday.

Language

This is a minor problem than you think. Unless you're backpacking around some exotic country, you'll find people in restaurants, hotels, and vendors of all activity to speak English. A tip: try to learn some words and phrases in the local language, and you'll find is treated differently if you start conversations with "hello" in their language and show it is willing to make the effort to succeed in their country.

Cost

The big question! First, some statistics: the average U.S. couple spends approximately $ 3700 for their honeymoon package … and this does not include expenses once they're at your destination. When considering a resource that is NOT all-inclusive, take some time to research the area and find out what price meals, which cost a snorkel trip, what taxis cost, etc. Tourist sites are a good place to start.

Costs of excursions and meals can easily add up to much more than your airfare and hotel, and we must be realistic and ready. Consider staying in various hotels in honeymoon, maybe one or two nights in a very nice place to start, then a more moderate property, with perhaps less of a vision for the rest.

People, people, people

Here are a number of important considerations. First, who else will be in snow? Do most of the guests at the resort in your age group? Are they young and adventurous, or older and mostly interested in golf? Does the resort market to Families will find a lot of kids splashing in the pool when you're trying to have a romantic moment of relaxation? It's going to be lively bar, with its type of music? Are you going to feel at home, or a little out of place?

Then we will talk about density: Do you prefer to be in the center of action, with many happy newlyweds everywhere, or more quiet and more isolated? Think if you want to stay in a hotel with 400 rooms, or a complex with 40 private villas … the experience will be very different. And you want to be waited on hand and foot, or alone to explore for themselves? Want to go shopping, maybe buy souvenirs or local-style clothing, or maybe some artwork? Maybe you want a mix: in Hawaii, popular combinations include a couple of nights in the heart of Waikiki, along with a couple of nights at the North Shore … Maui, perhaps a split between Lahaina / Maui area and isolated Hana coast.

Finally, how wants to learn the local people, their language, food, and culture? In general, all-inclusive resorts, you will find yourselves with other tourists, separated the local style. If you want to immerse themselves in the local environment, perhaps consider a smaller hotel, further away from the main tourist areas.

History and culture

Would you like to visit the old … ruins of centuries-old cathedrals … and native people? The beauty of art, architecture and history of Greece, Italy, Scotland and Ireland, or Mayan civilizations can make for a fabulous honeymoon experience.

Europe is an obvious destination, but also thinking of the Mayans and Aztecs in Latin America … Buddhist temples in Bali and Thailand … Angkor Wat in Cambodia … Buddhist and Hindu temples in India. China is becoming a more popular destination, as follows: consider visiting the Great Wall and see the Terracotta Warriors.

Accommodation

How are you sensitive to humidity and temperature? This can determine not only the destination but also the choice of the location, since not all the A / C systems are created equal. How close do you want to be with nature? I have stayed in safari lodges in Africa do not even have fabulous full walls … only mosquito nets to protect you at night. For some, this is a dream come true, for others it can be a nightmare.

How important is your space living in your hotel room? Do you feel claustrophobic easily? Would you like to lounge around in the morning, breakfast in bed, or like to get up and go there explore the island? It is a spa on the property important to you? It is an ocean view from your room important to you … enough to justify the highest price?

Also consider how often spend their holidays. If you go to and from the room to the beach, pool, restaurant, you may want a place with ground-level villas rather than have to lift up and down all the time. If you are spending most of their days exploring the island, it did not matter both.

Nightlife

Are you going to want to go dancing / clubbing? Or maybe see some native dances performances? If you go to Hawaii and looking for nightlife, you'll probably want to think about or maybe Oahu Maui.

For Mexico, one should think of Cancun or Cabo, instead of some of the most isolated resorts. If you are thinking in the Caribbean, the answer to this question may affect to the island or region you choose as well. Music: what do you want to listen on your honeymoon? Mariachi bands, steel drums, reggae, or the Hawaiian hula … What attracts you?

Food!

How adventurous are you dining? What about your boyfriend? Would you like to try local food, are many restaurants? Recurring menus often have very good Americans and Europeans, but for authentic local cuisine will have to venture out of town.

All inclusive and cruises often make fabulous food very affordable, if you are not in a hotel with all-inclusive property in restaurants are often very expensive compared to restaurants outside and tend to be less compared to the authentic local cuisine / natives. If the place chosen is in or near a reasonably large town or tourist area, you have plenty of choices for dinner, if you are detained and isolated, it is possible that you have no choice but to dine at the resort (and pay prices, if not included!).

In areas like Fiji and Tahiti, often find that while the action is officially all-inclusive they have a "meal plan" which includes food and drinks at times. Sometimes these plans cover only breakfast and dinner, which leaves you the option of testing local cuisine and eating relatively inexpensively to lunch.

Adventure!

How about a safari in Kenya or Botswana? Or hiking in the Andes … maybe a trip to Machu Pichu? Or a week in a rented yacht in the Caribbean? What about travel Australia on a Harley? Perhaps journey through the jungles of Costa Rica, the observation of the monkeys and exotic birds? If these appeal to you, the first thing to do is make sure that also appeal to your wife! This type of travel to create memories of a lifetime, and can be very affordable as well. Often, couples who want to combine an "adventure" trip with a few days relaxing in a beach resort for these types of combination packages can be put together for you by a knowledgeable travel agent and make the best of both worlds.

Water Sports

Do you and your boyfriend dive (or want to learn)? You'll find that almost all tropical destinations Diving and snorkeling is available. Some will dive courses offered by the resorts, while other resorts have partnered with local dive companies. If you like diving, make sure your travel agent know, so they can recommend schools in the wave conditions tend to be good and not good reef diving nearby so there is more than just sand in sight. Overall, a great surfing beach will not be a great snorkeling beach!

Are you interested in going to deep sea fishing? It is important to know what fishing is like when you leave. For example, while you can take a fishing trip guide in any of the islands of Hawaii, the able to realize some recovery, and are substantially better fishing on the Big Island!

It is also important to talk with your agent Travel on what type you want to enjoy water sports. If you are interested in jet skiing and parasailing, you'll want to stay somewhere if you want to navigate kayak with turtles and whales around the reef, you will want to be elsewhere. It is also useful to know how far it is from your hotel at the best places for their activities-that will not want to spend two hours a day from your hotel roundtripping their activities.
